It was just a few days ago that we had carried a report saying that, the Motorola Milestone (or the Droid) is all set to make its debut in India. Just a week later, we have conformation form Motorola regarding the same.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Motorola Droid has indeed landed in India and will be known as the Milestone here. The latter is really an apt name for the phone primarily because it has been a milestone device for Motorola who was on the verge of shutting down its entire handsets manufacturing department. This was owing to poor sales and continuous drop in profits. With the Droid, Motorola has sprung back to life and the phone has been a bestseller in U.S. where it has to ward of threats like the Google Nexus One and the all powerful iPhone.

We have talked about the Droid in detail earlier too. However, lets take a brief look at the phone in its Milestone Avatar as well.
The Milestone is claimed to be the one of the world's thinnest QWERTY sliders (13.7mm or 1.37cm). It has a hi-resolution (480*854), TFT display capable of  pinch and zoom gestures. Being an Android device, it comes loaded with a suite of Google mobile applications including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube. This is apart from the tonnes of apps and widgets from Android Market. In its Indian avatar, the Milestone also packs in a lifetime free access to fully voice-guided street-level navigable maps of 401 Indian cities. This offers voice-guided navigation and routing in the cities and across major national and state highways.


Lets now take a look at the hardware specs of the device. It is powered by a very powerful ARM Cortex A8 processor. This is the same processor that powers the iPhone 3GS and the multimedia
powerhouse that is the Omnia HD. It has a 5-megapixel camera at the rear with dual-LED flash, AutoFocus, and image stabilization. It supports Stereo Bluetooth / BT 2.1, USB 2.0 High Speed and comes with a 3.5mm jack as well. Motorola's proprietary Crystaltalk technology too finds its way in. It comes preloaded with an 8GB memory card - which can be replaced by a higher capacity one should the need arise.

Additional functionality and apps include:

    * Unified Google, Microsoft Office and Facebook Contacts

                     Just after Toshiba announced high-density hard drives for laptops last week, Western Digital also joins the game with the new 2.5-inch WD Scorpio Blue 750GB hard disk drive for laptops. With 750GB capacity new WD Scorpio Blue 750GB has two 375GB-per-platter areal density and also features Advanced Format Technology. WD has also added WhisperDrive technology for quieter operation of these HDDs which are listed at $149 (Rs. 7,200 approx.) online and come with a three-year warranty. New WD Scorpio Blue 750GB HDD joins the league of industry's first 1TB laptop drives. This 750GB HDD comes with 12.5mm height form factor. The HDDs from both companies have 8MB buffer size and make best of 3Gb/s SATA interface. Sony has made firmware 3.21 available for PlayStation 3 game consoles. This update removes the "Install Other OS" feature from PlayStation 3 consoles which were released before PS 3 Slim. Basically, you won't be able to run other operating systems
like Linux kernel based OS on your PS 3.  The new firmware 3.21 update brings new features and improvements. It is crucial for connecting the console with PlayStation Network and play games that require firmware 3.21 or higher.

Apparently, George Hotz, the guy who found PS 3 hack, had noted on his blog that the PS 3 owners should resist updating their consoles with official 3.21 firmware. Hotz said he will look into a safe way of updating with official firmware 3.21 and also retain the "Other OS" support. Hotz noted, "It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support."

Sony cited security reasons for which they'll be removing the 'Other OS' support. We just don't know how soon will the hack with Custom Firmware for PS 3 is due. Those who choose to wait won't be able to sign-in to the PlayStation Network. The PS 3 remained unhackable for a few years and now, the action to remove one of the distinct features has ticked the hackers.

If Hotz is successful in finding out a hack for installing custom firmware, a whole new community of PS 3 hackers will arise.

India has been consistently lagging behind other countries when it comes to the availability of bandwidth and the overall Internet speed. While the situation is way better than what it use to be during our dial up days, even the best mainstream broadband connections

However, nothing beats the kind of speeds you get with VDSL if you happen to be a download junkie. Just to entice you and to let you know what these speeds can possibly achieve, you can actually download a full length movie in about three minutes and a full song in a few seconds or even lesser.


As expected, services of this kind would never be light on the pocket. This 50Mbps Broadband plan comes at Rs. 8,999 per month rental with 200 GB free data transfer. George Hotz, the first guy to hack iPhone and even PS3, has now announced that a new working solution will jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3 firmware loaded devices and even iPad. Jailbreak is a method through which the iPhone OS is made to run several applications available outside the Apple App Store. It even enables running illegal apps. The new solution will also included latest models of iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G with new bootrom.

Hotz (Geohot) sent an update through his Twitter account about the video showing new solution to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 based devices. Here's what Hotz wrote on his blog:

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models (ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

An untethered jailbreak means one won't have to jailbreak the iPhone OS device every time its battery dies or there's a need to reboot the device. What's surprising is Hotz's claim that his solution will also jailbreak iPad which is yet to be available in retail.

And so, the chase game of 'Cat and Mouse' between Apple and the iPhone hackers continues.

Same monotonous design of the earlier generation, slightly bulky, erroneous webcam color representation, a higher SKU with better components available for just a little more money

Summary

The Acer Aspire 5740G is a refreshed model in Acer's 2010 Aspire series line up. Earlier versions of the Aspire have been decent performers with a Value for Money (VFM) proposition. This year it receives an update with Intel's Core i3 330M 2.13 GHz processor and the new generation ATI Radeon HD 5470 graphics chip. The rest of the design and components are the same. So will Acer continue to reign in the paisa vasool desktop replacement segment? Or should people expect more than just a CPU/Graphics update.

The Acer Aspire 5740G has got a fairly sturdy body. The design is exactly the same as the earlier model - Aspire 5738G - which is something we are not too happy about. C'mon Acer, we're kinda bored with the chunky 15-inchers that we've been seeing from you guys all this while.

A newer design with a thinner, lighter body would've been great. You could take pointers from your recent Gateway acquisition now, can't you? Or maybe that's too much to ask since you do manage to keep the bang for the buck pricing. The Aspire 5740G sells in the market for Rs. 38,624. A similarly configured Dell Inspiron 15 costs Rs. 3,500 more and that too with a slightly lower power ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.  

We may crib about the dated design but that doesn't mean it's a bad one to begin with. For instance, the keyboard is quite comfortable to type on, and thanks to the hardware upgrade there's a fair performance boost when compared to the last generation. Just have a look at the benchmark score graphs.

Therefore the bottom line is, if you're interested in a big-screened laptop to do fairly heavy-duty work and don't mind playing games at slightly lower detail setting, then the Aspire 5740G is a decent pick. But we're tempted to suggest a better Aspire 5740G version that comes with a powerful Core i5 430M processor and ATI Radeon 5650 graphics. It also comes with a 500GB drive instead of 320GB. This one should run your games better and will cost you roughly Rs. 4,000 more, which is more value for money in our opinion. But expect a little lower battery life from it.
